The Shared Vision
Morris, MN
The creation of a space that fostered gathering, relaxing and eating, as well as the ability to host small performances.
Innovative Design
The renovation of the Turtle Mountain Cafe at the Student Center took place in two phases. The goal was to start with an immediate noticeable change for the students and faculty. In this first phase, the look and feel of the dining space was altered with a change in finishes and furnishings. Sofas and lounge chairs were mixed with the existing tables and booths. An intimate stage was added to enhance small performances that occur in this area but simply works as a seating area at other times.
The second phase affected the kitchen and servery. The front line became a projecting arc into the servery space which placed emphasis on healthy, freshly prepared food assembled in front of the patron. As the cafe is often used after dining hours, it was imperative to have a way to close the servery off from the gathering space. The glass- paneled doors provide both physical and acoustical isolation.
The University noticed a significant increase in revenue and customer flow coinciding with both phases of this renovation.

From beginning to end of each project, Engan Associates gives complete attention to detail and budget. I especially appreciate their willingness to meet and discuss details and conditions that arise during design and construction. They are very approachable and responsive when situations need attention. I fully intend to continue working with them on future project.
