The Shared Vision
New Ulm, MN
Bring new life to the historic Turner Hall by expanding dining and banquet services, creating outdoor space, and adding accessibility features. At the heart of New Ulm since 1856, Turner Hall was built by early German immigrants. It is home to the first gymnastics program in the state as well as the Rathskeller — the oldest bar in Minnesota.
Innovative Design
This project focused on creating multipurpose spaces geared towards flexible use. A new entry, elevator, accessible restrooms, and patio enhanced existing uses, maintaining the ideal of “Turnhalle” as a social center. The structure is listed with the National Register of Historic Places, and all work was completed in accordance with these guidelines.

Working with existing space is harder than building new. The result is better if you can blend the old with the new. In any project we do, we like to have a story and a history. Where we come from is where we’re going–not living in the past but not destroying the past either. You have to learn from the past to live in the future.
