The City of Benson is currently advancing a comprehensive renovation of the former National Guard Armory, transforming it into a versatile community center. In January 2025, bids were received for the partial demolition and renovation. This plan, includes removing the front office section and infilling the basement, upgrading bathroom facilities, and preserving the building’s historic gymnasium space
The project is supported by a $678,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), awarded through CARES Act funding in 2021. Once finished, the renovated armory will feature modernized restrooms, ADA compliant access, and flexible multi-use space.
This renovation marks a major milestone in Benson’s commitment to repurposing a historic civic landmark, maintaining its structural charm and central role in community life while upgrading its utility for contemporary needs.
